Wojskowa Akademia Techniczna

The existing network infrastructure no longer adequately supported the needs of the Military Technical Academy. The only way out of this situation was to modernize the network.

The Jarosław Dąbrowski Military Technical Academy has been operating in Warsaw since 1951. It is a military public academy supervised by the Minister of National Defense. Students at the Academy are educated in military and civil studies. It also conducts scientific research.

The specific character of the Academy lies in directing candidates to acquire the skills necessary to be able to become professional soldiers. The number of candidates is consistent with the demand and the limit set each year by the Minister of National Defense in relation to the needs of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland in corps and personal groups. Recruitment to the Academy is carried out among high school graduates applying for access to service in the Polish Army.

The university's activity to date has been based on a network infrastructure that facilitates the communication of its individual units. This network had a skeleton in a structure of tree, based on HP switches from the 2810 and 2510 series.

“In recent years, our backbone network has grown significantly. Currently, it supports 2,000 university-related users and up to 3,000 students in dorms. In addition, clusters appeared in many units, for the needs of research, while some departments began the implementation of video services and e-learning programs. To meet all our needs, our 1GB Ethernet was insufficient,” says Piotr Jakubik, Department of Communications and Computer Science at the Military Technical Academy.

The existing network infrastructure no longer adequately supported the needs of the Military Technical Academy. The only way out of this situation was to modernize the network.

“Until now, all our needs have been “patched” with funds that had been acquired at a given moment. It also happened that from the moment of reporting the need to the actual implementation of the project, we waited over a year, and after that time our solution was no longer adequate to the current situation. Therefore, when last year the rector allocated a large part of the university's financial resources for IT expansion, without hesitation we have decided to use them for the modernization and extension of the computer backbone network,” says Piotr Jakubik, Department of Communications and Computer Science at the Military Technical Academy.

The implemented HP solutions were an indispensable basis on which the Military Technical Academy could optimize its network infrastructure. By using HP devices with higher parameters and better performance, the network could meet its requirements and support the academy’s needs. The use of the new network backbone has an impact on guaranteeing security, high reliability, and high data availability.

“The expansion of the network infrastructure is a dynamic qualitative leap. In 2000, the university had a 2MB connection with the world, and the main firewall was DX2 486. After several years we had Ethernet 1GB, and soon we will go over 10GB. In addition, the new network backbone means higher performance and bandwidth. This solution will enable the university to easily expand its IT department in the coming years,” says Piotr Jakubik, Department of Communications and Computer Science at the Military Technical Academy.

The advantages of the new system make it especially streamlined for end users. The applied solution will improve their daily work and enable the implementation of new teaching projects. Additionally, it has improved network security and ensured system continuity even in the event of a failure.

“Due to the uniqueness and level of advancement of the solution, the implementation of the project was an interesting challenge for K3System engineers. Bearing in mind the scale of the project and in particular the unique nature of the solution, we are convinced that the completed implementation will be a perfect confirmation of HP's technological capabilities and competence of our engineers,” says Michał Kowalski, CEO, K3System Sp. z o.o.
